Google Slides SVG Limitations

Google Slides doesn't support direct SVG file upload from disk. It treats SVG as a raster image when inserted via URL, losing vector scalability. Workarounds exist for sharp vector display.

Method 1: Insert SVG via URL

If your SVG is hosted at a public URL, insert it via Insert > Image > By URL.

  • Host your SVG on any web server (GitHub, your site, etc.)
  • Insert → Image → By URL → paste the SVG URL
  • Google Slides downloads and displays the SVG
  • Limitation: rendered as a static image — not editable paths

Method 2: Paste SVG as Google Drawing

Open Google Drawings, insert your SVG, then copy-paste it into Slides. This preserves vector quality better than PNG.

  • Open drawings.google.com → new Drawing
  • Insert → Image → Upload from computer → select SVG
  • Ctrl+A → Ctrl+C (select and copy everything)
  • Switch to Google Slides → Ctrl+V (paste)
  • The drawing pastes as a high-quality image group

Method 3: Convert SVG to High-Res PNG

For maximum compatibility: convert SVG to PNG at 2× display size. A logo appearing at 400px wide should be exported at 800px.

  • Open SVG in Inkscape → Export PNG at 300 DPI
  • Upload to Google Slides: Insert → Image → Upload from computer
  • Set display dimensions to 50% of exported dimensions for Retina crispness
  • This method is the most universally compatible across all presentation viewers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Slides display SVG files?

Partially. SVG inserted via URL displays as a static image. There's no native SVG upload or path editing in Google Slides.

Why does my SVG look pixelated in Google Slides?

Google Slides rasterizes SVG content at a fixed resolution. Use Method 3 (high-res PNG) for guaranteed sharpness, or use Method 2 (Google Drawing paste) for better quality.

Can I use animated SVG in Google Slides?

No. Google Slides doesn't play SVG animations. For animated slide elements, use Google Slides' own transition and animation system, or create an animated GIF.

What's the best format for logos in Google Slides?

PNG at 300 DPI with transparent background, at 2× the display size. Until Google Slides adds native SVG support, high-res PNG is the most reliable approach.

Can I make a Google Slides template using SVG backgrounds?

Slide backgrounds must be images. Create your SVG background design, export as high-resolution PNG, and set it as the slide background in Slides > Slide > Edit theme.
