SVG in Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop can open and export SVG — but with important limitations. Here's what works and what to use instead.

Supports PNG, JPG, BMP, WEBP up to 5MB
Opening SVG in Photoshop
File > Open → select SVG → Photoshop imports it as a Smart Object at a rasterized resolution. You choose the pixel dimensions at import.
- File > Open → navigate to .svg file
- Photoshop prompts for width, height, and resolution
- SVG imports as a raster Smart Object (not editable vector paths)
- Double-click the Smart Object to edit in Illustrator (if AI is installed)
- For true vector editing, open in Illustrator instead
Exporting SVG from Photoshop
Photoshop can export Shape Layers (vector content) as SVG. Layer panel → right-click Shape Layer → 'Export as' → SVG.
- Right-click Shape Layer in Layers panel → Export As
- Format: SVG → Export
- Or: File > Export > Export As > SVG
- Only works for true Shape Layers — raster layers export as raster images embedded in SVG
- For complete vector SVG: create shapes with Pen or Shape tools (not brushes or filters)
Photoshop vs Illustrator for SVG
Photoshop is a raster editor that has limited SVG support. For professional SVG work, use Illustrator.
| Task | Use Photoshop? | Use Illustrator? |
|---|---|---|
| Photo editing with SVG overlay | Yes | No |
| Create vector logo as SVG | No | Yes |
| Trace raster image to SVG | No | Yes (Image Trace) |
| Open SVG for reference | OK | Better |
| Export clean web SVG | No | Yes |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Photoshop edit SVG vector paths?
Only Shape Layers created in Photoshop are editable as vectors. SVG files imported as Smart Objects are rasterized — paths aren't editable in Photoshop.
Why does my SVG look pixelated when opened in Photoshop?
Photoshop rasterizes SVG at a fixed resolution you choose at import. To see the SVG at its full quality, set resolution to 300 DPI+ at a large size, or view it in a browser instead.
Can I use Photoshop to create SVG icons?
You can create icons using Shape tools and export as SVG. But Illustrator is a better tool for this — it has full vector capabilities and cleaner SVG export options.
How do I extract SVG paths from a Photoshop PSD?
Select the Shape Layer in the Layers panel. Right-click → Export As → SVG. This exports the vector paths of that layer as SVG.
Does Photoshop support SVG filters and effects?
No. Photoshop-specific effects (layer styles, blending modes, filters) don't translate to SVG. Export a rasterized PNG for effects-heavy graphics.
