Importing SVG into Silhouette Studio

File > Open → navigate to your SVG file. Or drag and drop the SVG onto the Silhouette Studio canvas. SVG import is available in all Studio versions.

  • File > Open > select .svg file
  • Or drag the file directly onto the canvas
  • Imported SVGs appear grouped — ungroup to access individual paths
  • Check cut lines in the Cut Style panel (red = cut, blue = perforate)

SVG Version Requirements

Silhouette Studio's SVG import quality depends on your version.

VersionSVG Support

Designer EditionBetter SVG handling, DXF import

Setting Cut Lines in Studio

After importing SVG, assign cut paths correctly.

  • Object > Cut Style: 'Cut' for clean through-cuts
  • Red lines = cut, blue = sketching/drawing, none = print only
  • For vinyl: set all paths to Cut
  • For print-then-cut: set outer boundary to Cut, design to Print

Mirroring for HTV in Silhouette Studio

For heat transfer vinyl, mirror the design before cutting: Object > Flip Horizontal. The mirror toggle is essential for HTV — forget it and the design presses backwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't Silhouette Studio open my SVG file?

The SVG may use advanced features. Open in Inkscape, save as 'Plain SVG', then import. This strips editor-specific elements that Studio can't parse.

Does Silhouette Studio support multi-layer SVG files?

Yes — each SVG group or layer imports as a separate element. Ungroup in Studio to work with individual paths.

Can I create SVG files in Silhouette Studio?

Yes. Studio has vector drawing tools. You can also use the Trace feature to create cut paths from raster images.

What cutting settings should I use for vinyl?

Use the Silhouette-preset material settings. For standard vinyl: force 10, speed 8 on Cameo 4. Adjust for specialty materials.

How do I convert a Silhouette Studio file to SVG?

File > Save As > SVG (available in Designer Edition and above). Basic edition doesn't support SVG export.
