SVG vs PNG for Print

For most print applications, SVG is the superior choice — here's why vector graphics outperform PNG for everything except photographic printing.

Print Resolution Requirements

Print demands 300 DPI or higher — SVG delivers this without file size penalties.

What Print Shops Accept

Professional print production has established format standards.

  • Screen printing: SVG, EPS, PDF (vector required for spot color separation)
  • Digital print: PDF preferred, PNG 300+ DPI accepted
  • Large format: SVG/EPS/PDF — PNG requires enormous files for quality output
  • Embroidery: SVG → DST via embroidery software
  • Sublimation: PNG 300 DPI at final print size, or SVG converted at print time

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I send SVG or PNG to my print shop?

Send SVG (or EPS/PDF which are also vector) for logos, graphics, and non-photographic content. Send high-res PNG or TIFF for photographs. When in doubt, ask the print shop what their RIP accepts.

What DPI is equivalent to SVG for print?

SVG has no DPI — it's resolution-independent. A print shop's RIP rasterizes SVG at the output DPI (usually 300–600 DPI for digital, 1200+ DPI for offset). SVG is inherently equivalent to infinite DPI.

Can I use a PNG logo for a large banner print?

Only if the PNG is large enough — a 300 DPI PNG for a 4-foot banner needs to be 14,400 pixels wide. That's a huge file. An SVG logo prints at 4 feet, 40 feet, or 400 feet from one small file.

Do all print shops accept SVG files?

Most modern print shops accept SVG, PDF, and EPS. Some legacy shops only accept AI or EPS from Illustrator. Call ahead if unsure, or send a PDF export of your SVG which is universally accepted.
