What Makes a Good Stencil SVG
Stencils require connected paths — if a letter like 'O' or 'D' had no bridge, the inner circle would fall out when the stencil material is cut. The SVG must have bridges (connecting strips) between enclosed areas. Convert your stencil image first, then check for islands in Inkscape and add bridges manually.
- Bridges: small strips connecting enclosed letter areas (O, D, B, 8)
- Islands: enclosed shapes that would fall free — must be bridged
- Use Line Art preset to capture the stencil outline structure
Cutting Stencils from SVG
Once you have a clean SVG stencil, import into Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, or LightBurn for cutting. Mylar film (7 mil or 10 mil) is the most durable stencil material for repeated use. Adhesive vinyl works for one-time use stencils.
- Cricut: import SVG, use Stencil Film material setting
- Silhouette: import SVG, cut on 12×12 mylar with slow speed
- Laser cutter: import SVG into LightBurn, cut on 7 mil mylar
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add stencil bridges in Inkscape?
Draw a thin rectangle over the gap between the enclosed area and the outer path. Select both paths and use Path > Union to connect them into one cut path. This creates a bridge that keeps the inner shape connected.
What is the best material to cut stencils from SVG?
7 mil Mylar film for repeated-use stencils (paint projects, airbrushing). Adhesive vinyl (Oracal 631) for wall stencils that need to stick flat. Cardstock for one-time use crafts.
