Inserting SVG in PowerPoint

PowerPoint 2016 and later support SVG file insertion directly.

  • Open your PowerPoint presentation
  • Insert > Pictures > This Device (or Online Pictures)
  • Browse to your .svg file and click Insert
  • The SVG appears on the slide — resize with corner handles, it stays sharp
  • Alternatively: drag and drop the .svg file directly onto the PowerPoint slide

Editing SVG in PowerPoint

PowerPoint allows basic SVG color editing after insertion.

  • Click the SVG and go to Graphics Format tab (appears when SVG is selected)
  • Change Graphic Color to match your presentation theme
  • Ungroup the SVG (Ctrl+Shift+G twice) to access individual paths
  • After ungrouping: each path is editable as a PowerPoint shape
  • Warning: ungrouping converts SVG to PowerPoint shapes — you can't easily revert

Frequently Asked Questions

Which versions of PowerPoint support SVG?

PowerPoint 2016, 2019, 2021, and Microsoft 365 all support SVG insertion. PowerPoint 2013 and earlier do not — convert to PNG for older versions.

My SVG shows a white box around it in PowerPoint — how do I remove it?

The SVG has a white background rectangle. Edit the SVG in Inkscape first: delete any background rect element. Or select the SVG in PowerPoint, Format > Remove Background (works on some SVGs).

Can I edit the colors of an SVG in PowerPoint?

Yes for single-color or simply colored SVGs using the Graphics Format > Change Graphic Color option. For granular color editing, ungroup the SVG (Ctrl+Shift+G twice) to edit each shape individually.

How do I make an SVG icon the same color as my PowerPoint theme?

After inserting, click the SVG > Graphics Format > Change Graphic Color > choose a theme color. Or ungroup and set each shape's fill to the theme color via the Format Shape panel.
