Step 1: Prepare Your SVG File

Before uploading, ensure your SVG is cut-ready. Open the file in Inkscape or a text editor to verify it has clean, closed paths.

  • Remove any raster images embedded in the SVG
  • Ensure all paths are closed (start and end points connect)
  • Simplify complex paths to reduce node count
  • Remove hidden layers or invisible elements
  • Convert text to paths/outlines if any text is present

Step 2: Upload to Design Space

In Cricut Design Space, click Upload in the left toolbar. Click 'Upload Image'. Navigate to your SVG file.

  • Desktop app: Upload → Upload Image → Browse → select .svg file
  • Web app (app.cricut.com): same Upload button, same process
  • Design Space shows a preview — verify it looks correct
  • Select 'Cut Image' (not Print-then-Cut) for vinyl/paper cutting
  • Click Save to add to your uploads library

Step 3: Insert and Resize

From your uploads library, click the saved SVG, then 'Insert Images'. The SVG appears on the canvas.

  • Drag corner handles to resize — hold Shift to constrain proportions
  • Or type exact dimensions in the W (width) and H (height) fields
  • Use the lock icon to keep proportions while resizing
  • Position using the X/Y coordinates in the top toolbar

Step 4: Prepare for Cutting

Use Attach, Weld, and Flatten as needed before sending to the machine.

  • Attach: locks relative positions of multiple pieces on the mat
  • Weld: merges overlapping paths into a single shape (prevents cuts at overlaps)
  • Flatten: merges layers for Print-then-Cut projects
  • Check the Layers panel — each color = a separate mat cut
  • Click Make It to send to your Cricut machine

Frequently Asked Questions

What SVG file size limit does Cricut Design Space have?

Cricut Design Space doesn't publish an exact file size limit, but very large SVGs (hundreds of paths, 1MB+) may cause slow performance or errors. Simplify complex SVGs before uploading.

Why does my SVG upload as a flat image instead of cut paths?

If Design Space shows your SVG as a print-quality image instead of cut paths, the file may contain embedded raster images. Re-create as a true vector in Inkscape.

Can I upload multiple SVG files at once to Cricut Design Space?

No — Design Space requires uploading one file at a time. However, you can include multiple elements within a single SVG file and they'll import as separate layers.

My SVG has too many colors in Design Space — how do I fix it?

Each unique color in the SVG becomes a separate layer in Design Space. Before uploading, reduce the number of colors in the SVG. In Inkscape, merge paths of the same color into one group.

How do I resize an SVG in Cricut Design Space to a specific size?

Select the SVG on the canvas. In the top toolbar, type the width or height and press Enter. The SVG scales proportionally (when the lock icon is active).
