Importing SVG in Silhouette Studio
SVG import requires Silhouette Studio Designer Edition or higher — the free version is DXF-only.
- Open Silhouette Studio Designer Edition
- File > Import > Import to Library or Import to Canvas
- Navigate to your .svg file and click Open
- The SVG appears on the canvas with cut lines visible
- Note: Silhouette Studio Basic (free) does not support SVG import — upgrade or convert SVG to DXF first
Setting Up the SVG Cut File
After importing, configure cut settings for your material.
- Select all elements and check that cut lines appear (red lines in cut preview)
- Set material type: Vinyl, Cardstock, or Heat Transfer — affects blade depth and speed
- Adjust the design size to match your material sheet
- Use Page Setup to match your cutting mat size
- Send to machine: Cut > Send to Silhouette
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I import SVG in the free Silhouette Studio?
SVG import is a Designer Edition feature. Workarounds: convert SVG to DXF online (any free converter), then import DXF in the free version. Or open the SVG in Inkscape and save as DXF.
My SVG imported but there are no cut lines — why?
The SVG may have fills but no stroke paths, or stroke colors don't match Silhouette's cut line detection. In Silhouette Studio: select all > Object > Fill Color > None, then set a cut line style.
Why is my SVG design scaled incorrectly after import?
SVG units may be in px vs mm vs in. Set the SVG document width/height in mm or inches before exporting for accurate Silhouette import size. Or manually resize to the correct dimensions in Studio.
Can I import multi-color SVG files into Silhouette for multi-layer cuts?
Yes. Each color in the SVG becomes a separate layer in Silhouette Studio. Use the Layers panel to cut each color separately from different material sheets.
