SVG Design Requirements for HTV

Heat transfer vinyl designs should be simple, bold, and have no internal islands smaller than 0.5 inches. Thin lines under 2mm are hard to weed and may tear. Each color requires a separate SVG layer cut from a different HTV color.

  • Keep design under 12x12 inches for a standard shirt
  • Minimum line width: 2mm for HTV weeding
  • Internal islands (letters like O, A, B) must be at least 3mm across
  • Each color = separate HTV sheet to cut and layer

Heat Press Settings for HTV

Temperature, time, and pressure vary by HTV type. Always use a Teflon sheet or parchment paper cover. Do a test press on scrap fabric first.

  • Standard HTV: 315°F / 158°C for 15 seconds, medium pressure
  • Glitter HTV: 320°F / 160°C for 20 seconds
  • Stretch HTV: 300°F / 148°C for 10 seconds
  • Always peel hot for standard HTV; check package for cold-peel HTV

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct SVG size for a shirt design?

Adult shirts: 10–12 inches wide. Kids: 6–8 inches wide. Always center on the chest, about 2–3 inches below the collar.

Do I need to mirror my SVG before cutting HTV?

Yes — mirror the design horizontally before cutting. The design cuts face-down on the vinyl, then flips when pressed onto fabric.

What is the difference between regular HTV and stretch HTV?

Regular HTV is rigid — fine for most fabrics. Stretch HTV (like Siser Stretch) flexes with the fabric — essential for athletic wear and spandex.

Why is my HTV peeling off after washing?

Under-pressing is the most common cause. Increase time by 5 seconds. Also ensure fabric is 100% dry before pressing and pre-press to remove moisture.
