How the Slice Tool Works
Slice divides two overlapping shapes where they intersect. You get three pieces: the part of shape A outside B, the part of B outside A, and the overlapping area as its own piece. Delete the pieces you don't want.
- Select exactly 2 layers to use Slice
- Click Actions > Slice
- Three new shapes appear — delete the pieces you don't need
- Use to: knock out text from a shape, cut circles from rectangles, create stencils
Common Slice Use Cases
Slice is used to create monogram split designs (initial sliced with a line), knockouts (text appearing as a hole in a shape), and to remove overlapping areas from layered designs.
- Monogram split: slice letter with a diagonal or wavy line
- Knockout: slice text from a rectangle — text becomes a window
- Remove background: slice your design from a rectangle to get exact outline
- Create stencil bridges: slice small rectangles across an enclosed shape
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Slice button greyed out?
Slice requires exactly 2 layers selected. You may have too many layers selected, or the layers may be grouped. Ungroup and select just two.
Can I slice a multi-color SVG?
No — Slice works on ungrouped single-layer shapes only. Flatten or ungroup your SVG first, then slice one element at a time.
How do I slice text into a heart shape in Design Space?
Place text over heart shape, select both, click Slice. Delete the pieces outside the heart. The text now appears only inside the heart outline.
Does Slice work on curved shapes?
Yes — Slice works on any SVG path including circles, custom shapes, and text outlines.
