How to Prepare SVG Files for DTF Printing

DTF (Direct to Film) transfers print from raster PNG files — not SVG directly. Convert SVG to PNG at the right size and DPI, then send to your DTF printer.

SVG to DTF — The Workflow

DTF printing uses a raster PNG (with white ink underbase) printed on film and heat-transferred to fabric. Your SVG must be exported as PNG first.

  • Export SVG as PNG at 150–300 DPI at final garment print size
  • DTF printers handle the white ink underbase automatically — you just need the CMYK layers
  • No mirroring needed for DTF (unlike HTV) — DTF film is applied face-down by the printer, not you
  • Any fabric works: DTF transfers bond to cotton, poly, blends, denim, leather
  • Full color capability: DTF prints unlimited colors and gradients from your PNG

DTF vs HTV vs Sublimation — When to Choose DTF

DTF has advantages over HTV and sublimation for certain use cases.

  • vs HTV: DTF prints full color in one layer; HTV requires one cut per color
  • vs Sublimation: DTF works on cotton; sublimation requires polyester
  • vs Screen printing: DTF has no setup cost per color; screen print is cheaper at high volume
  • Best for: full-color detailed designs, photos, gradients, small runs on any fabric

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send an SVG directly to a DTF printer?

No — DTF printers (and DTF gang sheet services) accept PNG or JPEG raster files. Export your SVG as a PNG at 150–300 DPI at the final print size, then upload to your DTF service.

What DPI for DTF PNG files?

150 DPI is sufficient for DTF printing at most garment sizes. 300 DPI for very small detailed designs. DTF transfers look sharp at 150 DPI because the ink dot resolution is finer than the pixel count.

Does DTF print work on 100% cotton shirts?

Yes — DTF transfers adhere to cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, and most fabric types. This is DTF's biggest advantage over sublimation (which requires polyester).

How do I convert my imagetosvg.com SVG for DTF printing?

Download the SVG, open in Inkscape or Canva, export as PNG at 150–300 DPI at your garment print size (typically 10–12 inches wide). Upload the PNG to your DTF print service.
