Glowforge Color Layer Convention
The Glowforge App reads SVG colors as separate operations. Each unique color appears as a separate layer in the Glowforge UI where you assign Cut, Score, or Engrave.
- Each unique stroke color = one Glowforge operation
- Recommend: blue = cut, red = score, black fill = engrave
- Stroke width must be 0.001 inch (hairline) for cut/score lines
- Filled shapes = engrave; outlined shapes = cut or score
Creating a Glowforge SVG in Inkscape
Set Inkscape document to mm units. Use blue 0.1px strokes for cuts, red 0.1px strokes for scores, black fills for engrave areas. Save as Plain SVG.
- Document: mm units, page size matches material size
- Cuts: blue stroke, 0.1px, no fill
- Scores: red stroke, 0.1px, no fill
- Engrave: black fill (#000000), no stroke
- Save as Plain SVG
Frequently Asked Questions
What SVG format does Glowforge accept?
Plain SVG (not Inkscape SVG). Glowforge also accepts PDF and AI files.
How do I engrave a photo on Glowforge?
Glowforge accepts raster images inside SVGs for engrave operations. Embed a grayscale PNG in your SVG document for photo engraving.
Why is my Glowforge cutting instead of engraving?
The layer has a stroke color instead of a fill. Remove the stroke and add a black fill to make Glowforge engrave it.
What is the maximum SVG size for Glowforge?
Glowforge Pro: 19.5 x 11 inches. Glowforge Basic and Plus: 19.5 x 11 inches cutting area (actual bed is 20 x 12 inches).
