Using SVG Files for Laser-Cut Resin Molds
Laser cut the SVG design into acrylic or MDF to create a mold master. Pour silicone over the master to create the negative mold. Simple flat designs (coasters, keychains) work best with this approach.
- Laser cut into 3mm acrylic for smooth mold surfaces
- Add 2–5mm depth to the cut for adequate resin depth
- Apply mold release spray before pouring silicone
Converting SVG to 3D Mold Masters
Import the SVG into Tinkercad, Fusion 360, or Blender, extrude the design to the desired depth, and 3D print in smooth PLA. Seal with XTC-3D or sand smooth before casting silicone.
- Extrude SVG paths by 3–10mm in 3D software
- 3D print in PLA at 0.1mm layer height for smooth surface
- Seal 3D print before silicone: XTC-3D or UV resin coating
Frequently Asked Questions
What SVG designs work best for resin molds?
Bold, simple designs with clean edges work best. Fine details under 1mm may not transfer well to poured resin. Avoid very thin bridges that could break in silicone.
Can I use an SVG directly as a mold?
SVG is a 2D format. You need to convert it to a physical master via laser cutting or 3D printing before creating the silicone mold.
