How to Use SVGs in Google Sheets
Sheets rejects SVG uploads — but icons and graphics still get into spreadsheets sharply with these routes.

Icons in Cells
The IMAGE() function loads pictures into cells from URLs — but not SVGs. Export your icon set as PNGs at 2x display size, host them, and IMAGE("...png") renders crisp in-cell status icons, logos, and rating symbols. Insert > Image over cells accepts PNG uploads for one-off graphics.
- IMAGE() renders hosted PNGs exported from your SVG masters
- 2x-size exports keep in-cell icons retina-sharp
- Emoji and UNICHAR() cover simple symbol needs without images
Dashboards and Branded Reports
For branded dashboard headers, insert PNG exports via Insert > Image, or build simple vector shapes in the embedded Drawing tool, which stays sharp at any zoom. When Sheets charts need to leave the spreadsheet, download them as SVG from the chart menu — the one place Sheets actually speaks vector.
- Drawing-tool shapes are true vectors inside Sheets
- Chart downloads offer SVG export for reuse elsewhere
- Header logos: PNG at 2x from the SVG master
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does IMAGE() show a broken icon for my SVG URL?
Sheets' IMAGE() doesn't render SVG sources. Convert the icon to PNG (2x size), host that, and the same formula works perfectly.
Can I export a Sheets chart as a vector?
Yes — chart menu > Download > Scalable Vector Graphics. The exported SVG scales cleanly into slides, docs, and design tools.
