When You Need DXF Instead of SVG
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is the standard for CAD and CNC workflows. While SVG works for hobbyist cutters (Cricut, Silhouette, LightBurn), professional CNC routers and CAM software expect DXF or DWG.
Method 1: Inkscape → DXF (Free)
Inkscape includes a DXF exporter. File > Save a Copy > Desktop Cutting Plotter (DXF).
- Set units to millimeters (Document Properties → Units)
- File > Save a Copy → choose 'Desktop Cutting Plotter (R14) (*.dxf)'
- Inkscape converts Bezier curves to polyline approximations
- For more control: Extensions > Render > DXF Output plugin
Method 2: Adobe Illustrator → DXF
Illustrator produces better-quality DXF with true curve support (NURBS). File > Export As > DXF.
- File > Export > Export As
- Format: AutoCAD Interchange File (.dxf)
- Export curves: keep checked for Bezier accuracy
- Set version: AutoCAD 2018 for modern CAM software
Validating the DXF Output
Always test the DXF in your target software before production:
- Open in LibreCAD (free) to verify geometry
- Check that dimensions match the SVG original
- Verify curves are smooth — look for excessive straight-line approximation
- Test a small section before cutting the full job
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DXF support all SVG features?
No. DXF doesn't support SVG fills, gradients, or patterns — only geometry (paths, lines, arcs). Colors may not transfer. DXF is for geometry only, not styling.
What DXF version should I use for laser cutting?
DXF R14 or 2000 are most universally compatible. LightBurn accepts R14+. Check your machine's software documentation for the recommended version.
My DXF import is at the wrong scale in my CAM software — how do I fix?
DXF uses unitless coordinates. Set units explicitly in Inkscape (Document Properties > Units = mm or inches) before exporting. Then verify units in your CAM software's import dialog.
Can I convert SVG to DWG instead of DXF?
DWG is AutoCAD's proprietary format. Inkscape and open-source tools can only export DXF. To get DWG, open the DXF in AutoCAD and save as DWG, or use a DXF-to-DWG converter.
How do I batch-convert multiple SVGs to DXF?
Use Inkscape's command line: inkscape input.svg --export-dxf=output.dxf. Write a shell script to loop through all SVG files in a folder.
