Tracing with Inkscape's Trace Bitmap

Inkscape's Trace Bitmap (Path > Trace Bitmap) offers three main tracing approaches.

  • Open Inkscape and import your image (File > Import)
  • Select the image on the canvas
  • Open Trace Bitmap: Path > Trace Bitmap (Shift+Alt+B)
  • Choose Brightness Cutoff for simple B&W logos
  • Choose Edge Detection for outline-only tracing
  • Choose Multiple Scans > Colors for multi-color image tracing
  • Click OK — a new vector path appears on top of your image

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best Inkscape Trace Bitmap setting for a logo?

For single-color logos: Brightness Cutoff at threshold 0.5. Increase threshold to capture more of the image as black, decrease to capture less. Enable 'Smooth' and 'Stack scans' for cleaner paths.

How do I delete the original bitmap after tracing in Inkscape?

After tracing, the new vector path is stacked on top of the original bitmap. Click the bitmap and press Delete. The vector path remains, now a standalone SVG object.

Why does my Inkscape trace have too many nodes?

Increase the Smoothing value in Trace Bitmap settings. After tracing, use Path > Simplify (Ctrl+L) to reduce nodes further. Fewer nodes = cleaner paths and smaller SVG file size.

Can Inkscape trace multi-color images automatically?

Yes — use Multiple Scans > Colors mode. Set the number of colors (scans) to match your image's palette. Inkscape traces each color as a separate layer. Results are good for simple illustrations but AI-powered tools like imagetosvg.com generally produce cleaner output for complex images.
