Why Line Art Converts Exceptionally Well

Line art — high-contrast black strokes on white — is the ideal input for vectorization. Clear edges, limited colors, and defined forms produce clean, smooth SVG paths.

  • High contrast = accurate edge detection
  • Minimal colors = simpler, smaller SVG files
  • Consistent stroke width = smooth path generation
  • Clear subject isolation = no background noise to trace

Preparing Line Art for Conversion

For best results, prepare your line art before uploading.

  • Scan at 300–600 DPI — more resolution = finer detail captured
  • Increase contrast to pure black-and-white (Threshold adjustment)
  • Remove paper texture with a median filter or Threshold
  • Save as PNG (transparent background if possible)
  • Avoid photos of drawings — use a scanner for best quality

Conversion Settings for Line Art

Use the 'Default' or 'Line Art' preset in our converter. These settings optimize for stroke accuracy over color accuracy.

  • Reduce color count to 2 (black + transparent)
  • Higher path detail setting for thin, complex lines
  • Lower noise filter to preserve fine strokes
  • Preview and download when satisfied

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my line art look the same after vectorizing?

Very close. Simple, clean line art converts with high accuracy. Very fine details under 2px may be simplified. Complex crosshatching may be interpreted as fills.

Can I vectorize pencil drawings?

Pencil drawings have low contrast and can be tricky. Darken the scan using Levels in any image editor first. The converter handles pencil better with high-contrast preprocessing.

What DPI should I scan my line art at?

600 DPI for fine details. 300 DPI minimum for general line art. Higher DPI gives the vectorizer more pixel data to trace, resulting in smoother, more accurate SVG paths.

Can I use the SVG line art for Cricut projects?

Yes. Vectorized line art is perfect for Cricut. Use it as a cut file or as a score/drawing file with the Cricut pen attachment.

Why are my converted line art paths jagged?

The source image may have low contrast or low resolution. Increase scan resolution, apply a Threshold adjustment, and re-convert. Also try increasing the 'Path Smoothing' setting.
