SVG to Sublimation Workflow
Sublimation printers use raster files — export your SVG at the correct DPI for each blank.
- Design in SVG for resolution-independence, then export PNG at 300 DPI for each product size
- 11oz mug full wrap: export at 2925×1260 pixels (300 DPI at 9.75×4.2 inches)
- T-shirt front: export at 3600×3600 pixels (300 DPI at 12×12 inches)
- Tumbler wrap: export at 300 DPI at your tumbler's specific wrap dimensions
- Coasters: export at 300 DPI at 3.75×3.75 inches (4-inch coaster with bleed)
Sublimation SVG Design Best Practices
Design SVG for sublimation with vibrant color in mind.
- Use bright, saturated RGB colors — sublimation intensifies on white polyester
- Colors on dark substrates: sublimation only works on white or light-colored blanks
- Fill the entire design area — sublimation has no 'white ink' — the blank's white shows through
- Use gradients freely — sublimation reproduces smooth gradients beautifully
- Avoid very fine lines below 1pt — they may wash out in sublimation dye printing
Frequently Asked Questions
Do sublimation printers accept SVG files directly?
No — sublimation RIP software and printer drivers use raster formats (PNG, TIFF, JPG). Design in SVG for scalability, then export high-res PNG at the correct size for your blank before printing.
Why do sublimation colors look dull before heat pressing?
Sublimation dye activates and becomes vivid during the heat press phase (380–400°F). The print from the sublimation printer will look muted and washed out — this is normal. Colors transform fully during heat transfer.
Can I sublimate on dark shirts?
No — sublimation requires white or very light polyester fabric. The dye is transparent — the fabric color shows through. For dark shirts, use screen printing, DTG, or heat transfer vinyl instead.
